Using this language clearly and naturally helps boost your score in the Fluency and Coherence assessment criterion.

Essential metalanguage and functional phrases can be put into categories by how you use them in the test:
1.Opening Responses (Buying Time & Being Natural)
Instead of starting with "yes" or "no," use natural fillers and introductory phrases to gather your thoughts:
That's a really interesting question..."
‘’Well, to be honest..."
Off the top of my head, I'd say..."

2.Expressing & Clarifying Opinions
Clearly signal your perspective rather than just stating facts:
"As far as I'm concerned..."
"From my point of view..."
"If I had to express an opinion, I'd say..."
"To put it another way..."

3. Giving Examples & Evidence
Use these to transition naturally and illustrate your point:
"For instance..."
"A prime example of this is..."
"To give you an idea of what I mean..."
"Specifically..."

4. Structuring Part 2 (The Long Turn)
Use signposting language to guide the examiner through the bullet points on your cue card:
Introduction:
"I'd like to talk about...
"To start with, I should mention that..."
The Main Point: "Moving on to how I felt about it..."
Conclusion: "To wrap it all up..." / "All in all..."

5. Transitioning in Part 3 (Two-Way Discussion)
Use contrast markers and conditional structures to discuss abstract ideas:
"On the one hand..., but on the other hand..."
"Looking at it from a different perspective..."
"It's worth considering/mentioning that..."

Using targeted discourse markers and functional vocabulary helps build smooth, natural responses in every section of the exam; however, don’t overdo it. Forcing too many formal linkers into every sentence sounds unnatural and robotic.
